How this is measured

Our nodes are asked every two minutes for their full peer table — not just live connections, but every address they have heard of. Results accumulate over time, so the picture widens as peers come and go. Node addresses are gossiped to every participant in the peer-to-peer network; nothing here is private information.

Nodes behind NAT are invisible. Only nodes that accept incoming connections can be discovered. The real network is larger than this page shows.
Chain is only known for nodes that connect to us. A node we have merely heard of reports no chain tip, so the branch split is measured over a smaller set than the total — the figures below say which.
One operator can run many nodes. Identities are per-installation, so this counts nodes, not people.
Miners are not on this map, and cannot be. Miners connect to a single pool over stratum and are visible only to that pool's operator. There is no network-wide view of miners. Ours are shown on the live stats page.
